This summer I spent a week in France visiting friends and my host familiy before heading to Morocco. I decided to only shoot film the entire time I was there… which may or may not have been a good idea. I haven’t developed my own film since high school and I ended up using some really old rolls I had hidden in my room for probably 7 years. Nothing wrong with experimenting, right?
People watching. PARIS.

Louvre

You can rent these little boats in the afternoon and put them in the little pond. I don’t know who liked it more, the little kids or their grandparents.

I walked past a laundry mat and saw this woman working on a crossword puzzle. I went in and started talking to her, and she was kind enough to let me take her picture.

Pompiers. They were very insistent that we stay for Bastille day, but we had to leave for Morocco so we missed it.

In 2010 I lived in Avignon, studying at the Université d’Avignon for a quarter. I lived with a great host family who owns a theater company, so I was fortunate enough to see lots of wonderful shows during my stay. Avignon is known for its month long theater festival in July, and I’m so happy that I was able to catch a few days of it since I missed it in 2010.
AVIGNON.

Palais des Papes. I would go to the gardens at the top and write letters and study for tests.

Man in mud. I spy a poster with my host dad on it.

People would perform in the streets at random all day and all night. The streets were filled the whole time we were there.

Maybe this is a little old fashioned, but I love bar soap. You can smell this stuff walking down the street. Lavender and rose and citrus…it’s so hard to not buy some every time you see it.

Meet Dave, my new friend and most recent photo story.

The necklace he wears everyday holds his wife’s ashes so that she is always with him. He jokingly calls it his “ball and chain.”

This summer I spent six weeks living in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. I stayed in a small village seeing, smelling, tasting, hearing, and experiencing the Berber culture. Hiking up and down the side of a dirt mountain to the Kasbah, I was able to escape the modern world for a little while and live simply. This was home.

I spend some time following around Keane, a local barber here in Athens. To be honest, I thought he was going to be about 50 years older.
I never appreciated how much skill goes into cutting hair until I spent a couple weeks with him. No wonder why people are so particular about who cuts their hair.
Keane was nice enough to let me follow him around and do a video project on him. [ you can see the video here: The Secret Keeper ] I also decided to take some still pictures too, and I’m glad I did.

It’s funny to watch my grandparents sit around in anticipation for the mail. It’s one of many cute little things they do that makes me smile.

I love to ask my grandmother to tell me stories about the farm she grew up on in Poland. She always talks about the tiny house her big family squeezed into and the orchards surrounding the property that produced most of the food that fed them during World War II.
I was fortunate enough to visit my mom’s side of the family in Poland last summer after studying abroad in France. One rainy day, I got to see the house that her brother’s family still lives in.
